Pioneers had many worries when they started settling the northeast portion of the Dakota Territory in the late 1870s and into the 1880s. Drought, floods and grasshoppers were just a few of the challenges they faced, but the most devastating danger was fire.
Editor’s Note: The following was submitted by Joanne Harwick of Yucaipa, CA, a former Milbank resident. The first part of the story describes her family’s return to the area after World War II, and in the second part she recalls the work of threshing the harvest.
Editor’s Note: J. C. Calhoun, the secretary of war in 1823, ordered an expedition to the headwaters of the St. Peter’s River which today is known as the Minnesota River. Major Stephen Long was the commander of the expedition which took the group to Big Stone Lake and Lake Traverse.
