Early Childhood Screenings
The annual early childhood screening for Big Stone City Public School will be Friday, March 18, in the school’s preschool room, beginning at 8:15 a.m.
Preschool screening is a requirement for kindergarten entrance, but it is not a prerequisite for preschool entrance. Children who will be three on or before March 18 are eligible for screening.
Teaching staff will also complete the Developmental Indicators
for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL-4) assessment. Children will be observed in the developmental areas of language, motor and concepts. During the screening, parents will also be able to receive the results of the DIAL 4 assessment, see the preschool classroom and meet the teachers. The purpose of the screening is to identify health and learning problems or giftedness. Early identification and intervention are the keys to preventing learning and health problems from becoming more serious.
Children who were previously screened do not need to attend the screening; however, families are more than welcome to participate and register at this time.
Preschool at the Big Stone City School currently has two sections. Both sections are Monday-Thursday. Preschool focuses on school readiness, building strong relationships with peers and adults, the whole language approach to learning, and hands-on activities. The data from the assessment is used to develop specific learning goals for each child.
Appointment letters will be sent to parents whose children’s names are on the Big Stone City census. Anyone who does not receive a letter or would like more information should contact Ruth Trautner at (605) 862-8108 ext. 121.
