Brown Bag Activity Program Available for Area Youth
Brown Bag Programs are now available for youth and their families to pick up outside the Grant County 4-H office. Totes are located on the east side of the courthouse by the County Extension office door. The totes are filled with educational programs. There is no charge for the programs.
“We are excited to offer this innovative approach to reach, educate and entertain youth around the area,” says Sara Koepke, South Dakota State University (SDSU) extension 4-H youth program advisor. “The programs are assembled to provide hands-on learning in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The bag includes all the supplies and instructions to complete each activity.”
“Our plan to is provide two different programs – one in each tote. Once all the program bags are gone, we will replenish the totes with new programs,” says Koepke. The totes are currently filled with a cultural education program where youth will make an African tribal mask. The other program will teach youth how to plant flower seeds and grow a bean in a bottle while learning about the life cycle of a plant. Koepke is working on programs like how to sew a button, bread in a bag, painting and health.
The idea of the Brown Bag Program came from the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. “Like them, we are trying to do online program delivery, but in a rural area like Grant County, access to internet services or supplies are limited for families,” says Koepke. By offering outreach program efforts through this innovative approach, Koepke can help youth learn by doing and pass the time without feeling like more schoolwork through distance learning.
