5:30 p.m.
The Big Stone City council met in Special session on Monday, March 9, 2026, meeting began at 5:30 p.m. with Mayor Brown presiding. Roll Call: Roscoe, B. Goergen, Hughes, A. Goergen, Absent: Stoddard and Redfield. Others present: Nancy Lee, Bryan Austin, Dewane Stoddard, Cathy Stoddard, Teresa Goergen, Jenna McFarland, Mary Smithwick and John McFarland.
The Pledge of Allegiance and the South Dakota State Pledge were recited.
Public Comments: Mary Smithwick was questioning the high rates that will be going into effect. Mayor Brown said this is being talked about tonight.
Mayor Brown discussed his concerns with the council and public regarding the motion on demand charges made at the March 2, 2026 council meeting. Brown then read a letter to council exercising his veto power under SDCL 9-19-10 for the motion made and passed at the March 2, 2026 council meeting in which the demand charges were set. Mayor Brown asked for council to vote if they were in favor or not in favor of his veto. Upon roll call: Ayes: A. Goergen, Roscoe, B. Goergen and Hughes. Nayes: None. Absent: Redfield and Stoddard. Motion Carried. No demand charges are set at this time.
Hughes made a motion that more information will be gathered and brought back to council for a determination at next month’s council meeting regarding the demand charges B. Goergen seconded. Ayes: Roscoe, B. Goergen, Hughes and A. Goergen. Nayes: None. Absent: Stoddard and Redfield. Motion Carried.
Being no further business Hughes called to adjourn the meeting at 5:41 p.m. Roscoe seconded the motion. All in favor. Motion Carried.
