Farmers Reminded to Stay Clear of Rights-of-Way
The members of the Grant County Commission have issued a reminder to farmers to keep their farming activities out of the public rights-of-way.
Depending on the specific roadway, the right-of-way extends between 33 and 50 feet from the center of the road. It is a violation of County Ordinance 1995-3 if farming activity extends into that area.
Additionally, state laws prohibit planting crops in the rights-of-way. The state statutes also specify that ditches and drainage must not be blocked or altered.
The commission reminds the public that the ordinances are in place to protect road safety, water drainage and visibility for motorists.
Violators may be fined and legal action may be taken against them. Restoration may also be required at the landowner’s expense.
