Farmers Should Consider Cover Crops for Prevent Plant Acreage

While most of South Dakota is experiencing drought conditions, the northeast part of the state and particularly Grant County has an abundance of moisture. “With the colder temps and a late spring planting, some fields will not be able to be planted timely and will be prevent planted,” said Krecia Leddy, district conservationist. “When thinking of how to treat these areas, consider how cover crops could play a crucial role in protecting soil, suppressing weeds and/or adding nitrogen in prevented plant fields. Cover crops can be a huge benefit by utilizing the excess moisture in the field, and deep-rooted cover crops aerate and reduce compaction in the soil.”
Producers have options when planting forage on prevent plant acreage without impacting their prevent plant payments. They can plant forage as a cover crop. The cover crop must be planted and managed according to expert guidelines including seeding rates, input rates, and NRCS termination rates. There are currently no restrictions with using the cover crop as in the past. The cover crop can be hayed, grazed, or cut for silage, or haylage at any time.
The Natural Resource Conservation Service is available to assist with putting together cover crop mixes and can assist with finding available cost-share for cover crop mixes. Leddy cautions that producers should communicate early and often with their crop insurance agent regarding prevent plant and crop insurance benefits.
