Friends of Library Offer Free Farley Fest Activities
Staff at the Grant County Public Library report record-breaking number of children enrolled to participate in the summer reading program. This year, there are 258 children signed up, and they have already logged more than 1,000 hours of reading time.
Color Our World is the theme of this year’s summer reading program which focuses on art. A local guest artist representing the highlighted art form of the week has been at each of the two sessions conducted since the kick off on May 28.
Stephanie Folk taught the children about mosaic art on Wednesday, June 4, and showed some of her mosaic creations. The children then created their own sun catcher mosaics using clear plates and tiles.
Jacque Frazee was the highlighted artist on Wednesday, June 11, showing his animal sculptures made from what some may see as junk, including items such a metals and old wire. The older children then created their own “trash to treasure” creations using canvas, paints and old puzzle pieces. The younger children made sock puppets.
The students going into grades six through nine had a colorful time creating murals that are displayed to each side of the library entrance, each leaving their mark on their own special section. “They are a beautiful reminder that each individual has unique characteristics but when we all come together, something amazing can be created,” commented Tammy Wollschlager, library director.
The next program will be staged at Lake Farley Park in conjunction with the Farley Fest celebration. Performing art will be celebrated with a Phil Baker Show on Friday, June 20, at 5:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend this fun for the entire family event being sponsored by the Friends of the Library group.
Another special event during Farley Fest will be sponsored by the Friends of Library. It is the presence of the 605 Art Bus at Lake Farely Park on Saturday, June 21. All children are encouraged to join the free fun projects offered at the 605 Art Bus.
With the special events during Farley Fest, the library will not have a Wednesday summer reading program event at the library. Instead, each child enrolled in the Summer Reading Program is encouraged to go to the library during regular library hours during the week, check out new books and play plinko to win a prize.
Weekly Wednesday events will resume on June 25. The July 2 sessions will be the last before the finale for grades kindergarten to fifth on July 9, and the after-hours party at the library on July 16 for those entering grades six to nine.
