Milbank Area Backpack Program Now Fundraising

Members of the public are invited to pledge their financial support to the Milbank Area Backpack Program during its 2023-2024 pledge campaign. The campaign is underway now and continues throughout the summer.
The program helped provide more than 145 students in need in the Milbank, Revillo and Wilmot communities with enough food to eat during the past school year. The backpack program provides nutritional breakfast, lunch and dinner meals and healthy snacks to qualified preschool through 12th grade students to take home with them to utilize on Saturdays, Sundays and weekday holidays.
Each year, the number of children in need of supplemental meals has increased, according to organizers. In addition, the cost of food has been steadily rising.
Based on a two-day weekend, the cost per child is $225 per year. The school year also includes some three- and four-day weekends, which increases the costs. At $225 per year per student, the program’s financial needs for the 2023-2024 school year are projected to be more than $25,000 just to cover the cost of food.
The backpack program is completely funded by donations from individuals and business partners in the surrounding communities, with little or no supplementing money from federal or state grants. Pledges of all amounts are welcome during this campaign and at any other time of the year.
See the ad elsewhere in this issue for details. For more information or to make a pledge, contact Jenn Falk at 605-676-2585 or 605-467-3293.
