Milbank to Host Special Olympics
Track Meet; Volunteers Needed
Milbank will host the Special Olympics Spring Track & Field Events on Friday, April 29, at A. B. Campbell Stadium. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. and the day will wrap up around 4 p.m.
Abbey Trapp, Special Education teacher/coach, and Peggy Greiner, Special Services secretary/coach, are coordinating the event and seeking volunteers to assist. They anticipate needing up to 80 volunteers.
Individuals are needed to measure, retrieve shot put balls and guide athletes to where they need to go. Also needed are timers, ribbon writers, recorders, starters, servers of food, and even people to cheer for the athletes. Individuals wishing to assist can contact Trapp at 763-516-3051 or abbey.trapp@ k12.sd.us or Greiner at 605-432-5579 or peggy. greiner@k12.sd.us. The coordinators will help volunteers choose a task that is comfortable for the individual.
An organizational meeting for volunteers will be conducted on Wednesday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the Milbank Middle/High School lunchroom.
“Special Olympics is a very important and life changing event for the participants. When they see and hear others cheering them on, it encourages them and gives them confidence,” said Trapp. “See them smile!”
Milbank will have school age and over 21 age participants. “Everyone is very excited to be hosting this event in Milbank,” said Greiner.
