Milbank Seniors to be Honored at Drive-Up Graduation Ceremony

Milbank Seniors to be Honored
at Drive-Up Graduation Ceremony

A drive-up graduation ceremony will be staged for seniors on Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m. in the Milbank High School parking lot. A graduate honor parade will be part of the celebration with the Milbank Police Department leading the graduates through town.
The parade route will go down 10th Avenue to South Main Street, through Main Street, down Diggs Avenue and end at Lake Farley. “We want to do as much as we can given the circumstances,” said Dan Snaza, high school principal, at Milbank’s board of education meeting Monday, June 8. The drive-up ceremony is being utilized because of current COVID-19 state guidelines.
All seniors are eligible to participate in the ceremony, but only students who have completed all requirements will receive the actual diploma during the ceremony. The event will be livestreamed on KMSD radio. “We don’t want people driving by and honking their horns,” stated Snaza. “We want this to be as honorable as possible. The seniors deserve that. They have missed so much this year.”
Space is limited so one vehicle will be allowed per student. The graduate should not drive the vehicle. Arrival times are being assigned to the seniors. They are as follows: Anderson-Hoeke, 1:30 p.m.; Holtquist-Paysen, 1:40 p.m., and Peschong-Yamaura, 1:50 p.m. Staff members will be ushers and direct the vehicles to each row.
The graduate car will drive to the stage where the graduate will leave the vehicle and walk up the stage, receive his or her diploma and exit the opposite end of the stage and return to the vehicle. One person from the vehicle will be allowed to get out and take pictures.
Once the graduate is back in the vehicle, they should return to their parking spot by driving around the perimeter of the parking lot and remain in their spot until all graduates have gone through the process.
Everyone should stay in their vehicles during the ceremony. Graduation dress code applies – no jeans or tennis shoes.
Practice for the ceremony is set for Friday, June 12, at 8 a.m.
