with All-State Orchestras
Milbank was well-represented at state-wide events for strings held in Rapid City February 17-19. Performing in the Middle School All-State Orchestra were Krista Gingerich, daughter of AJ and Susan Gingerich, and Joseph and Traci Tschetter, children of Ryan and Elaine Tschetter. Their parents were in attendance at the concert, along with siblings Annette, Russell, Felix and Mia Tschetter. Relatives from Milbank, Travis and Edith Stahl and cousins Josiah and Breanna, also attended the concert. Much credit goes to older sister and violinist, Megan Tschetter, for all her help preparing the audition and concert music. The orchestra was made up of nearly 80 students from eight South Dakota cities.
Rachel Schulte, daughter of David and Elizabeth Schulte, was selected to perform for the second time with the J. Laiten Weed Honors Orchestra, an elite group of the top 22 string players in the state, based on high school All-State audition scores. Attending the concert were friends from Hill City, Laura and Anna Dean.
The concert can be viewed on the South Dakota String Teachers Association’s FaceBook page. J. Laiten Weed was one of the first professional string teachers in the state and the director of the Yankton College Conservatory of Music. A large gift from his estate has provided funding for the promotion of strings in South Dakota, including sponsoring the Honors Orchestra. This year’s orchestra included students from Rapid City, Aberdeen, Brookings, Sioux Falls and Milbank.
Milbank strings teacher, Elizabeth Schulte, attended both concerts as well as participated in the 2022 Strings Symposium, a conference for string teachers.
