FILING NOMINATING PETITIONS FOR THE PRIMARY ELECTION AND FOR FILING INDEPENDENT
CANDIDATE PETITIONS
The deadline for filing nominating petitions for the primary election is March 31, 2026 at 5 p.m. central time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by March 31, 2026, at 5 p.m. central time, it is considered filed.
The deadline for filing nominating petitions to run as an independent candidate in the general election is April 28, 2026, at 5 p.m. central time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by April 28, 2026, at 5 p.m. central time, it is considered filed. For the offices of County Commissioner District 1, 3, and 5 and County Auditor, Register of Deeds, County Sheriff and County Coroner (2-year term) nominating petitions must be filed in the office of the Roberts County Auditor 411 2nd Ave. East, Sisseton, SD, and nominating petitions for the offices of U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, Commissioner of School and Public Lands, Public Utilities Commissioner, State Senate District 1 and 4, State Representative District 1 and 4, and Heartland Consumer Power District 5 must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building, 500 E. Capitol Ave., Pierre, SD 57501.
Nominating petitions for the offices of County Commissioner District 1, 3, and 5, County Auditor, Register of Deeds, County Sheriff, and County Coroner (2-year term), and Precinct Committeeman and Committeewoman Republican Delegates to the State Convention must be filed in the office of the Roberts County Auditor 411 2nd Ave. East, Sisseton, SD, during regular business hours. Nominating petitions for the offices of U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, Commissioner of School and Public Lands, Public Utilities Commissioner, State Senate District 1 and 4, State Representative District 1 and 4, and Heartland Consumer Power District 5 must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building, Pierre, SD 57501, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. central time.
