Officials to Test Sirens During Severe Weather Awareness Week

Severe Weather Awareness Week in South Dakota will be Monday through Friday, April 25 to 29.
Local siren tests will be on Wednesday, April 27, according to Kevin Schuelke, Grant County emergency management director. Community officials will test the fire alert siren in Milbank at 10 a.m., and the storm/tornado siren will sound at 10:15 a.m.
Schuelke noted that sometimes residents are unsure of what each siren sounds like. “The fire siren is a wavering tone for 15 seconds or less,” he explained. “The storm siren is a steady blast for a long duration and extended period of time. Keep in mind these sirens rotate on their poles.” Schuelke encourages residents to listen to and differentiate the two sirens.
Officials will also send out a CodeRed notification test, along with a message to notify the public about the siren test. Schuelke reminds members of the public who have not signed up for CodeRed, to do so by going to the website, https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/BFA422074595 and completing the form. Alternately they can text “Grant” to 99411 to receive a direct link to the enrollment form on their mobile devices.
Questions about the CodeRED system can be directed to Schuelke at 605-432-4637.
