Public Invited to Free Author Talk at Library

The public is invited to attend an upcoming author talk and book discussion at the Grant County Public Library on Thursday, April 30, at 5 p.m.
Authors John and Jane (Torness) Rasmussen will lead the discussion about their book, Dear Unforgettable Brother. The book documents the lives of Lars and Knute Stavig. Lars left his family in Norway and journeyed to the prairie of the Dakota Territory. Though their paths never crossed again, the brothers remained connected through letters sharing their life experiences across the sea.
The letters are the foundation for the book and reflect the challenges the brothers endured. They give a glimpse of what the pioneer immigrants faced as they built their lives and settlements on the plains. Many area residents may find similarities to the stories told by their own ancestors, according to Tammy Wollschlager, library director.
“As we celebrate the 250th year of America this year, it is a great time to reflect on the roll immigration played in the development of the country, the hardships that were encountered and the sacrifices that were made,” Wollschlager commented.
Jane Rasmussen is the great-granddaughter of Lars Stavig. Her husband John, is the president of the Heritage Museum of Roberts County, where the couple resides.
Members of the Friends of the Grant County Public Library will host the event and serve walking tacos and bars for attendees to enjoy during the discussion.
Multiple copies of the fast-reading book are available for check out at the Grant County Public Library. “Whether the book is read before the discussion or after, it will sure provide insight, appreciation and new perspectives as we celebrate America’s 250th,” Wollschlager predicts.
Preregistration for the event is appreciated but not necessary.
