Public Invited to Unique Luminary Event for It Only Takes a Spark

Despite the cancelation of the traditional cancer walk that would have been staged in June, the It Only Takes a Spark core committee has planned an alternative luminary event for Friday evening, July 24. Luminaries can be purchased in memory of loved ones who died from cancer or in honor of those who are living with the disease.

Public Invited to Unique Luminary
Event for It Only Takes a Spark

Members of the It Only Takes a Spark core committee invite the public out for a solemn evening to assist the organization's fundraising efforts. Earlier this summer, the group canceled the traditional cancer walk in response to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. They ramped up other fundraising strategies, including an online auction that concluded last week, and the upcoming luminary event.
Members of the community are invited to the luminary event at the parking lot of the Milbank High School on Friday, July 24. The evening is designed to honor those with cancer and remember those who have died from cancer and help raise money to assist local families who are coping with the impacts of the disease in their day-to-day living.
The evening’s events begin with the opportunity to drive through and view luminaries from 5 to 7 p.m. The area that will be lined with luminaries will be accessible for walkers who wish to stroll the sidewalk from 7 to 10 p.m. The lighting of the luminaries is slated for 10 p.m. The drive-through viewing and walkers’ access will both be available from 10 p.m. to midnight.
Luminaries can be purchased from any member of the core committee or from community cancer walk team members. Anyone wanting to make a donation or a memorial to It Only Takes a Spark, can mail a check to P.O. Box 105, Milbank, SD 57252.
In addition to the luminaries, those who attend Friday evening’s event can partake of a to-go meal option from 5 p.m. until the food is gone. Each meal includes a pork loin sandwich, a small bag of chips and a monster cookie donated by the St. William’s Care Center. Casey’s General Store is donating bottles of water to accompany the meal. A free-will donation will be accepted for each meal.
Also, from 7 to 10 p.m., there will be pop, water, ice cream floats and ice cream sundaes for sale.
Organizers are encouraging those who attend to practice appropriate social distancing techniques and to wear face masks.
