Roberts County Officials Release Winter Safety Tips
With winter temperatures dropping, the Roberts County Sheriff’s Office personnel remind everyone about the risks that come with heating homes and buildings this time of year – especially the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO).
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced by fuel-burning equipment such as furnaces, generators, diesel or propane heaters, and vehicles. CO exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, confusion, loss of consciousness, and can be fatal.
Carbon Monoxide Safety Tips:
• Never run fuel-burning heaters, generators, or vehicles inside a garage or enclosed space – even with doors or windows open
• Do not use outdoor or construction-style heaters indoors
• Make sure all fuel-burning appliances are properly vented and well-maintained
• Install working CO detectors near sleeping areas and on every level of your home
• If a CO alarm goes off, or if you experience symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, or confusion – get outside immediately and call 911
Electric Space Heater Safety:
• Keep heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn
• Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet – never an extension cord
• Do not leave space heaters running unattended or while sleeping
• Turn heaters off when you leave the room
Carbon monoxide incidents rise during the winter months, but a few simple precautions can prevent emergencies and save lives.
