Taxpayers Can Drop Off or Mail First-Half Tax Payments

The employees of Grant County are working to provide services for the county’s residents, despite the commissioners’ order last month, which closed the courthouse to public access. One of the innovations that has been put in place is a bear-proof locking dropbox, located near the south entrance to the building, as shown by Raynelle Mueller, Grant County treasurer, and Karen Layher, Grant County auditor. Those who have business to conduct are welcome to put their paperwork, documentation and payments in envelopes that are clearly marked so they can be easily sorted to the appropriate office. In some instances, it is helpful to call ahead, with specifics of the transactions. The officials ask that no one deposit cash payments in the dropbox.

Taxpayers Can Drop Off or
Mail First-Half Tax Payments

Grant County property owners are reminded that the first half of their 2019 real estate and mobile home taxes, payable in 2020, is due Thursday, April 30.
Property owners have received the current year’s notices printed on 8.5x11 paper and mailed in envelopes. They should have received one notice per parcel in January.
Because of the COVID-19 concerns, the Grant County courthouse remains closed to the public, but taxpayers can either mail their checks or put them in the secure dropbox near the south entrance to the courthouse.
“We ask that all taxpayers include your current telephone number on your checks so we can reach you about your payment if we have questions,” commented Raynelle Mueller, Grant County treasurer. She also recommends that taxpayers call her office before sending their payment if they have questions.
If leaving tax payments in the dropbox at the courthouse, the checks should be in an envelope clearly marked for the Grant County treasurer’s office. This option may be utilized through April 30 at 5 p.m. The dropbox will be emptied at that time, and any payments dropped after that time will be assessed late fees.
Alternately, payments can be mailed to the address on the tax notice. Mailed payments must be postmarked by April 30. As a reminder, the Milbank post office closes at 4:15 p.m. daily. “If your mailed envelope is not inside the main post office at that time, it will not be postmarked until the next business day, and late fees will be assessed on those postmarked after April 30,” Mueller stated.
Mueller also noted that any tax amount that is less than $50 for the year is due in its entirety at this time.
Tax bills not paid by the due date will be assessed an interest charge beginning Friday, May 1. Residents may contact the Grant County treasurer’s office at 605-432-5651 for more information.
