Thin Ice on Big Stone Lake Creates Danger and Risk
Over the weekend one ATV and one UTV went through the ice on Big Stone Lake, both becoming either partially or fully submerged.
According to a social media post by Arties Bait and Tackle in Ortonville, MN, warnings had been issued in regards to thin ice in certain areas of the lake.
The wind combined with slick ice will cause a lack of control, and no attempts to pull houses on or off the ice were recommended.
On Saturday, December 27, Big Stone County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Polaris Ranger ATV went through the ice, resulting in both occupants entering the water. Nearby fishermen were able to successfully assist the individuals and transport them to nearby access.
With the high winds and snow expected the next few days, visibility was reduced, making it harder to identify hazardous zones on the lake.
Areas reported to be very dangerous were between Mallard Point in Minnesota, and Shady Beach in South Dakota. Other areas of danger were between Sunset View addition and Meadowbrook Road East, both in Minnesota.
The wind blew a UTV and fish house into an ice heave and partially into the water on December 28. Both were removed and no injuries were reported.
