Tommy the Turtle
Tommy the Turtle and his associate visited preschool through second-grade children in Milbank on Monday, May 10. Tommy the Turtle is the mascot for the South Dakota Department of Public Safety office of Emergency Management and helps teach children around the state to understand various weather events that can occur. “Many preparedness messages are aimed at adults, but Tommy brings messages and books for kids, explaining and as a means to spark conversation in preparedness with family members,” commented Kevin Schuelke, Grant County emergency management director. Topics of the conversations and books include tornado, storm safety, blizzard, flooding and fire safety, according to Schuelke.
