Groceries for Veterans Program
After a hugely successful inaugural Groceries for Veterans event in March, organizers are excited to announce that three more food giveaways will benefit area veterans this year.
The next Groceries for Veterans giveaway will be on Tuesday, October 7, at 8 a.m. at Berens Market in Milbank. Through the program, area veterans and the widows of veterans will be able to receive free food boxes with products valued at $50.
Volunteers from the veterans groups will have a distribution location inside the grocery store. To receive the box with a combination of perishable and nonperishable grocery items, each veteran will need to show a Veterans Administration (VA) identification card, driver’s license with the word “veteran” listed on it or a DD214. Widows will need to show their spouse’s DD214.
“We’ve increased the number of boxes to be handed out from 50 to 80 because of the generous donations from the Grant County Christian Service Council, Twin Valley Tire and Whetstone Valley Electric Coop with matching funds from COBANK,” said Bob Frink, one of the spokesmen for the effort. Another addition to the boxes for this giveaway is that Valley Queen is adding a one-pound block of cheese to each box. The ownership of Berens Market is also assisting in providing a portion of the groceries.
The groceries for veterans program is a success through the combined support of members of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 19, of Milbank, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1054, of Watertown, Birch-Miller American Legion Post #9, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chapter 3486 and Sons of the American Legion Squadron #9, all of
Milbank.
Volunteers from the five veteran organizations will be present to assist recipients in getting the boxes of groceries to the veterans’ vehicles.
Organizers note that they plan to have free groceries for veterans again November 13 and December 16.

Frink also indicated that based on the success of the Groceries for Veterans food giveaway in Grant County, several other communities are preparing to launch similar programs.
