Veterans, Widows can Receive Free Groceries

Veterans, Widows can Receive Free Groceries
The Groceries for Veterans program will conduct a free distribution of groceries for veterans and the widows of veterans at Berens Market in Milbank. The event will be Tuesday, October 20, beginning at 8 a.m.
Qualified persons who would like to receive a box of groceries will need to show a military ID, a DD214 ,or a driver’s license with the word veteran on it. Any widow of a veteran can use their veteran’s DD214 to qualify. The first 76 veterans that morning will receive groceries. When the supplies are gone, the event will end.
Future grocery distribution events are planned for November 17, December 15, January 19, and February 16.
The Groceries for Veterans program has been a huge success because of generous donations from the five veteran groups in Milbank plus Grant County businesses, according to Bob Frink, one of the organizers. Donations from the Grant County Christian Service Council, Twin Valley Tire, Whetstone Valley Electric Cooperative, with matching funds from COBANK, and the seed money from the veteran groups has made the food distributions possible. Valley Queen is adding a one-pound block of cheese to each box.
Donations for the Groceries for Veterans program can be made to Berens Market, account 2175950 or by calling the VFW.
Since the Groceries for Veterans program started in Milbank, the communities of Ortonville, MN, Clark, Willow Lake, Webster, and Clear Lake also now are providing similar opportunities for their veterans, according to Frink.
