Proclaiming Age-Friendly Status
The public is invited to attend the official ceremony in which Milbank will be designated as an age-friendly community. The event will be Friday, January 31, at 9:30 a.m. in the Milbank Visitor Center.
Milbank is only the second community in South Dakota to achieve the honor. Sioux Falls is the other. The designation makes Milbank the newest member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities.
During the announcement event, speakers will be Pat Raffety, mayor; Bobbie Bohlen, Grant County Development Corporation executive director; Erik Gaikowski, AARP South Dakota state director, and Bob Sutton, Avera Health chief executive officer.
In a written statement Gaikowski said, “The City of Milbank has made the commitment to become an even better place for people of all ages by adopting features such as safe, walkable streets, better housing and transportation options, access to key services and opportunities for residents to participate in civic and community activities.”
By becoming part of the network, Milbank is committing to do even more to improve livability and involve older residents in the process. Participating communities in the Age-Friendly Network commit to improving their livability through an assessment of needs, development of an action plan, implementation of new projects and programs, and ongoing assessment.
