Voters in the Primary Election

Voters participating in the South Dakota primary election on Tuesday, June 2, found themselves standing on X’s taped to the floor to assure that they maintained the required six-foot social distancing required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The COVID-19 pandemic dictated that county officials provide a hand-sanitizing station and social distancing for voters, as well as sneeze guards, gloves and optional face shields for election workers. According to Karen Layher, Grant County auditor, as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, 685 registered Grant County voters had taken advantage of the option to vote by absentee ballot. Officials were anticipating a 20 percent voter turnout and said that results would be available on the South Dakota Secretary of State website beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
