LARGE SCALE MINE PERMIT AMENDMENT
COLD SPRING GRANITE COMPANY
Cold Spring Granite Company, 17482 Granite West Road, Cold Spring, Minnesota 56320 has submitted an application to the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources to amend Large Scale Mine Permit 8. The company’s resident agent is CT Corporation System, 310 South Coteau Street., Pierre, South Dakota 57501. The mining operation is located in Portions of Sections 7, 8, and 17; T120N-R47W, Grant County. The general location of the operation is approximately six miles east of Milbank, South Dakota. The primary mineral being mined is granite/dimension stone. The selected post mining land use is wildlife habitat.
The proposed amendment allows Cold Spring Granite to add 59.31 acres of contiguous affected land for an overburden (sand) stockpile, grout (waste granite) crushing pad, and block storage area and remove granite blocks from two pre-1971 grout piles for crushing. All other facets of the general mining operation will remain as described in the original permit.
The amendment and proposed conditions are available for review at the Minerals and Mining Program, 523 East Capitol Avenue, Pierre, South Dakota, or can be viewed on the Minerals and Mining web page at http://danr.sd.gov/Environment/MineralsMining/Exploration/NewMinePermitA.... The amendment is also available for public review at the Grant County Register of Deeds office in Milbank, South Dakota. As required in the Administrative Rules of South Dakota (ARSD), §74:29:03:12, the department is recommending conditional approval of Cold Spring Granite’s permit amendment. The conditions cover the following areas: General, Other Permits, Sedimentation and Erosion Control, Air Quality, Wildlife Protection, Reclamation, and Reclamation Surety. Comments may be submitted in writing by mail or online at http://danr.sd.gov/public/default.aspx.
Written objections to, statements in support of, or petitions to intervene and become a party to the proceedings pursuant to ARSD, §74:29:03:14 must be filed with the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources no later than July 7, 2022. The department will approve the amendment on this date if no petitions to intervene are received.
