High School Students Invited to Apply as Legislative Pages
High school students wanting a hands-on look at how the South Dakota Legislature works can now submit applications to be a legislative page for the upcoming legislative session.
The 102nd South Dakota Legislative Session runs from January 12, to March 31, with a recess from March 12 to 30. Pages serve in the House of Representatives or the Senate for one of five terms during the session’s main run.
The program is open to all high school juniors and seniors, including home-schooled students, from any school district in South Dakota. Pages are assigned to committee meetings in the mornings and Chamber floor sessions in the afternoons, assist in the Legislative Post Office, and help legislators, as needed. Students also participate in scheduled social activities and receive $55 for each legislative day they serve.
To apply for a Legislative Page position, students must have signed sponsorship approval from a current legislator, submit a completed application and cover letter, have written permission from their school and a parent or legal guardian, and provide two written letters of recommendation.
The preferred application deadline is Friday, October 2, with a final deadline of Friday, October 16. Information on the page program, including an application, can be found on Legislative Research Council’s website at sdlegislature.gov.
