Country music performers Tennessee Ernie Ford, LeRoy Van Dyke, Jerry Reed and Hank Williams, Jr., all have one unexpected thing in common – the Suns of the West, a band that got its start in Milbank, served as their opening act in the late 1960s and 1970s.
The 2019 induction class of the South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame includes the youngest-ever inductee in the history of the organization – Delaney Johnston of Deadwood, a former Summit resident. She is 16 and a junior at Lead-Deadwood High School.
The first concert of the season for the Chautauqua Concert Association will be Saturday, September 14, with a performance by Ball in the House, an A cappella group. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ortonville, MN, auditorium.
The community of South Shore will be brimming with activity Friday through Sunday, September 13 to 15, as the South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame (SDCMHoF) annual induction ceremony is staged in the Old South Shore School.
Celtic finger-style guitarist, Jerry Barlow, will present a free concert Tuesday, September 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Grant County Public Library in Milbank. Barlow’s arrangements have been described as “music to soothe the soul, warm the heart, and lift the spirit.”
Former Milbank residents, Neil and Terry Bagaus, founded the Suns of the West in 1969 and are celebrating 50 years of music. The band will perform at several shows in South Dakota to mark the anniversary.
